What Has Happened Since the October 17 Revolution?

Author: Real Arabic December 15, 2020 Duration: 17:03

On October 17 2019, Lebanese people from all sects and all regions took to the streets to protest against decades of poor governance. But what has happened since then? This episode looks back on the last 14 months to see what has changed and what has not in Lebanon since the revolution.

In this episode, we also mention two initiatives that we want to support.

26 Letters School is a small initiative with an amazing story. We will be interviewing them so you will hear it soon but check out their website to read more about them and to support a family: https://26lettersschool.org/donate

Safa, a Lebanese artist living in Australia is one of Amer's students who has started an online initiative called We Dream for Lebanon.

In Safa's words: 'Witnessing all that has happened in Lebanon and not being able to be there physically, I created an online survey for Lebanese citizens, expats, diaspora and anyone else who cares about Lebanon to share their input on how we might imagine our perfect Lebanon.'

The survey is conducted through the website - http://wedreamforlebanon.org/  The answers are sent to her email and then shared on the website and on the Instagram page (@wedreamforlebanon)

Real Arabic is for anyone who wants to move beyond textbook phrases and connect with the living, breathing heart of the Levant. This isn't about memorizing grammar rules in isolation; it's about hearing the language as it's actually spoken in homes and streets from Damascus to Beirut. Each episode is built around a slow, clear conversation or narrative in Levantine Arabic, deliberately paced and simplified for learners, with thoughtful English interjections to guide your comprehension without interrupting the flow. You'll listen to personal stories, discussions on current events, and explorations of history and culture, all serving as your gateway to understanding the region's nuances. The focus is squarely on practical, spoken Arabic, giving you the tools and confidence to engage in real conversations. To support your learning journey beyond just listening, full Arabic and English transcripts are available, allowing you to read along, study vocabulary, and grasp sentence structure at your own pace. This podcast believes language is inseparable from the people who speak it, so you're learning words and phrases while quietly absorbing the context that makes them meaningful. It’s an immersive, patient approach designed to make the rich dialect of the Levant accessible and genuinely interesting.
