Retrotopia Talks Super Mario Bros. 2 Revisited

Retrotopia Talks Super Mario Bros. 2 Revisited

Author: Alan, Brian, and Sam September 21, 2025 Duration: 2:01:37
Welcome to EPISODE 100 of Retrotopia: Another Video Game Podcast. This is a show where we, Alan, Brian, and Sam, get together to discuss video games from years gone by. We like to look at video games from the perspective of lifelong gamers and how they hold up in the retro sphere. This week we are discussing Super Mario Bros. 2, a NES game released in 1988 that took the Mario series in a bold new direction, swapping out the usual stomping on Goombas for picking up and throwing vegetables, enemies, and objects. Unlike its predecessor, it let players choose between Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Princess Toadstool, each with unique abilities, as they journeyed through the dreamlike world of Subcon to defeat the villainous Wart. You can join in on the fun FOR FREE over at patreon.com/retrotopia There, you can participate in the 9-Bit Banter Box, comment on the Game of the week, take part in polls, and listen to the Patreon exclusive Quick Play or get RetroBytes 15 days early with an exclusive Patreon topic. There’s a particular magic in the games we grew up with, a feeling that Retrotopia: Another Video Game Podcast captures in every conversation. Hosted by Alan, Brian, and Sam-a trio spanning Britain, Canada, and the United States-this podcast is built on a shared, deep-seated affection for the classics. Each episode feels like hanging out with friends who can just as easily dissect a game’s design philosophy as they can laugh about its quirks and memorable glitches. You’ll hear them dig into the titles that defined generations, from cult favorites to mainstream legends, exploring how these pixelated worlds shaped the landscape of modern gaming. The charm of this show lies in its blend of thoughtful analysis and easygoing banter, creating a space where nostalgia is examined, not just recited. It’s a genuine celebration of gaming history, free from pretense, where the conversation might pivot from a serious debate on a seminal RPG’s mechanics to a fond recollection of a frustratingly difficult platforming level. For anyone who finds comfort in the chirp of a cartridge being slotted into a console or the distinctive soundtracks of a bygone era, this podcast offers a regular, welcoming dose of that warmth. Tune in and rediscover why these retro experiences continue to resonate so powerfully today.
