RHLSTP #580 - Pea on the Cob - As if there weren’t enough people here for the Festival, Edinburgh numbers are swollen by Oasis fans, though Rich adlibs a decent joke for once, so it’s worth listening to the intro. His guest is RHLSTP favourite, Tim Key. They chat about being locked out of flats, broken cat-flaps, the year of the Herring and how much O2 paid to sponsor RHLSTP (in the golden era), Tim’s appearance in the new Greg Daniels sitcom The Paper and Robert Popper’s part in getting him there, 5k times and the pathetic money-making crimes that Richard never got caught for in 1989 (if you were one of the students he took to HMS Victory please get in touch for your rebate). Plus selling Dawn French a yoyo and nearly killing Michael Palin. It’s another classic Key:Herring collaboration, awkward, weird, boring and funny enough to almost make Richard pass out.

You’re probably wondering what those letters stand for, but after a few minutes listening to RHLSTP with Richard Herring, you’ll be too distracted by the laughter to care. This long-running, award-winning podcast is built on the simple, brilliant premise of one comedian having an extended, meandering, and deeply funny conversation with another fascinating person from the world of comedy and entertainment. Richard Herring, dubbed “The Podfather” for good reason, has a disarming and curious interview style that feels more like a pub chat with an old friend than a formal interrogation. Over hundreds of episodes, that approach has drawn in legendary figures like Stephen Fry and Eddie Izzard, alongside contemporary stars such as Katherine Ryan, and even the gloriously unpredictable force of nature that is Brian Blessed. The magic lies in the detours and tangents, where prepared questions often give way to surprising revelations and absurd digressions. Produced by Sky Potato, Go Faster Stripe and Fuzz Productions, the series covers a broad spectrum of creative life, from film and television to live performance, all filtered through a comedic lens. Each episode offers a unique glimpse behind the curtain of a performer’s mind, resulting in conversations that are as thoughtful as they are hilarious. It’s a masterclass in how to make an interview podcast feel both intimate and wildly entertaining.
