Goshawks with Dad - Surrey Hills

Goshawks with Dad - Surrey Hills

Author: Wren Productions March 19, 2026 Duration: 1:01:36

This one’s a special episode. I’m out birding in a Surrey forest with my dad. Early mornings, crisp woodland air, and that feeling that anything could happen… and it absolutely did.

We spent the day deep in the forest tracking down some serious woodland heavyweights. From the explosive power of Goshawks crashing through the canopy, to the subtle magic of Hawfinches quietly feeding high in the trees.

Add to that the distinctive calls of Crossbills overhead, Marsh Tits flitting through the undergrowth, and plenty of classic father-son birding moments, and you’ve got a proper wholesome, high-energy day out in the woods.

This episode is all about connection — to nature, to birds, and to where it all began.

If you love UK birding, woodland species, and those unpredictable magic moments… you’re in the right place.

Matt Spracklen hosts Rock 'n Roll Birder, a weekly audio excursion that pairs the quiet patience of birdwatching with genuine, conversational curiosity. Each episode is a walk, recorded on location at various reserves and wild sites across the UK, where the focus is as much on the experience and the people as it is on the species list. You might hear Matt deep in discussion with a guest who has built their entire career around birds and wildlife, getting into the nuanced details of conservation, behavior, and ecology. Other times, he’s accompanied by his wife, Sarah, whose perspective as an enthusiastic beginner brings a relatable sense of wonder and discovery to their outings, asking the questions any newcomer would think of. This approach makes the podcast wonderfully accessible for families, kids, and anyone with a budding interest in the natural world, all while satisfying seasoned hobbyists. Produced by Wren Productions, the series feels like a friendly, informative stroll where the soundtrack is provided by rustling leaves, distant calls, and engaging stories. It’s less a formal guide and more an invitation to listen in on shared moments of learning and appreciation for the feathered life all around us, proving that adventure and tranquility can be found just by looking-and listening-up.
