Announcement: 2 Podcast Interviews

Author: John Zhu August 24, 2020 Duration: 1:05
I recently did two interviews on other podcasts. The first is the Mandarin Slang Guide podcast, where we talked about some common Chinese expressions that had their roots in the characters and stories of the Three Kingdoms era. The second one is Journey to the West: The Podcast, where we had a long chat about classic Chinese novels and their cultural significance, including the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the Water Margin, and of course, Journey to the West. Have a listen, and also check out the other episodes on those podcasts, too. If you like what I'm doing, you might be interested in those shows as well.

John Zhu’s Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast unfolds one of history’s great epics, blending narrative depth with clear historical context. This isn't a dry academic lecture; it’s a vivid, chapter-by-chapter journey through the classic Chinese novel, designed to make its sprawling drama of loyalty, betrayal, and strategy resonate with modern listeners, particularly those coming to the story for the first time. Each episode carefully navigates the complex alliances and legendary battles of the Three Kingdoms period, translating cultural nuances and character motivations into a compelling audio experience. You’ll hear the ambitions of Cao Cao, the benevolence of Liu Bei, and the cunning of Zhuge Liang come alive, framed within the larger tapestry of Chinese history and literature. By focusing on the human stories within the grand political and military machinations, this podcast makes a foundational work of world literature feel immediate and gripping. Whether you're a history enthusiast, a lover of classic tales, or simply curious about a story that has shaped cultures for centuries, John Zhu provides an engaging and accessible point of entry. The Romance of the Three Kingdoms Podcast serves as both a faithful retelling and a thoughtful guide, inviting you to lose yourself in a world where honor is contested, and destiny is forged on the battlefield.
