Centrowitz also explains how a torn hamstring ended his pursuit of the 5,000-metre world record and shares the remarkable story of returning to a historic four-mile road race a year after finishing near the back of the field, 40 pounds lighter and ready to win.

Centrowitz reflects on coaching as an exercise in understanding the person behind the athlete, arguing that confidence, relationships and life circumstances matter as much as workouts.
