Buddhist Cosmology - Dr. Jeff Schoening

Buddhist Cosmology - Dr. Jeff Schoening

Author: Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism October 6, 2008 Duration: 2:00:33
We in the west are relatively unfamiliar with the Buddhist world view, even though it has great significance to those who would follow and / or study the path of the Buddha. This talk is an orientation to the Tibetan Buddhist world view. Cosmology is a branch of philosophy dealing with the origin, processes, and structure of the universe. This presentation describes from Buddhist viewpoints the origins of the universe, the process by which it begins, develops, and dissolves, and the way the universe is laid out, from single world systems to cosmically vast ones. We examine the career of Sakyamuni Buddha, from the time his “gotrarigs” (inclination to bodhi) was awakened until his final enlightenment. And finally we will consider the way we in Seattle fit into this Tibetan Buddhist structuring of the universe.

Within the ancient and living tradition of Tibetan Buddhism, the Sakya Monastery Dharma Lectures podcast offers a direct connection to teachings from one of its most venerable institutions. Presented by the Sakya Monastery of Tibetan Buddhism, these recordings bring the depth of Buddhist philosophy and practice into everyday life. You’ll hear lectures and guided instructions from respected lineage holders and scholars, exploring foundational concepts like compassion and wisdom alongside more intricate tantric practices specific to the Sakya order. Each session is an opportunity to engage with authentic dharma, whether it’s a detailed commentary on a classic text, practical advice for meditation, or insights into navigating modern challenges through a spiritual lens. This isn’t a curated overview but a genuine archive of teachings as they are given, allowing for a deep, gradual immersion. For anyone curious about Tibetan Buddhism or seeking to deepen an existing practice, this podcast serves as an invaluable resource, preserving and sharing knowledge that spans centuries. The presentations are thoughtful and thorough, inviting listeners to reflect and apply these timeless principles at their own pace. Tune in to find clarity, contemplation, and a sense of grounded connection through these sustained teachings.
