Surviving SURVIVORS (episode 58)

Surviving SURVIVORS (episode 58)

Author: Phil Nichols August 28, 2025 Duration: 1:17:27

Fifty years ago, schoolboy Phil was knocked out by a British science fiction TV show, the post-apocalyptic SURVIVORS. Created by Terry Nation - who also created DOCTOR WHO's recurring enemy the Daleks and BLAKES SEVEN - SURVIVORS ran for three seasons.

Today, Phil has persuaded Colin to take a first look at this sometimes harrowing (but ultimately life-affirming) cult classic, and together they discuss some selected episodes from the series. If you check out the show notes, you'll find direct links to the episodes we've been watching, so you can watch them, too.

Ever wondered how the robots of Isaac Asimov connect to the androids of today's TV shows, or what golden age pulp magazines can tell us about our current fascination with Mars? That's the kind of conversation you'll find on Science Fiction 101. Hosted by Phil Nichols and Colin Kuskie, this podcast digs into the genre's vast landscape, treating science fiction as a continuous conversation across decades. They move seamlessly from discussing a classic novel to analyzing a new film, all through their unique lens of past, present, and future. You'll hear deep dives into books, films, and television, where a topic like artificial intelligence might be explored through the work of Philip K. Dick one week and a modern streaming series the next. Phil, known for his work on Bradburymedia and other genre projects, and Colin, from the Take Me To Your Reader podcast, bring a genuine, conversational enthusiasm to every episode. It feels less like a lecture and more like joining two well-read friends who are eager to connect the dots across the entire spectrum of speculative fiction. For anyone who loves seeing how the old foundations shape the new frontiers, this is a thoughtful and engaging journey through the stories that imagine our world and all its possible tomorrows. Tune in to find your next favorite read or to finally understand why that classic story still matters.
