Water & Gender Equality

Author: Bijibilla Rama Rao March 30, 2026 Duration: 8:33

Access to safe water, sanitation is a critical factor in promoting gender equality, as women and girls are disproportionately affected by water scarcity and poor wash services.

“Where water flows, equality grows.” —World Water Day 2026

“Gender equality is not a women’s issue, it is a human issue. It affects us all.”—Emma Watson

Women and girs often bear the primary responsibility for fetching water, which can be physically demanding, time consuming, and dangerous, leaving them vulnerable to abuse and limiting their opportunities for education and income generation. Inadequate sanitation facilities increase risks of assault and compromise personal safety, while the lack of gender-segregated, functional spaces affects menstrual hygiene management and pregnancy care, further reinforcing gender inequalities. Globally 1.5 billion women and girls live in areas highly exposed to droughts, floods, and other water-related crises, which intensify economic stability, food insecurity, and gender-based violence.

Gender Inequality in Water Governance: Despite women’s central role in water collection and household management, they are often underrepresented in decision making and technical roles within water resources management. This underrepresentation limits the effectiveness of water policies and perpetuates marginalization. Gender inequalities persist at all levels of the water sector,, affecting access, use, and benefits from water resources, and are compounded by the lack of sex-disaggregated and intersectional data for evidence-based decision-making. Promoting gender equality in water access and management is not only a matter of fairness but also essential for achieving sustainable development. Ensuring women and girls have safe, reliable water and sanitation services, while empowering them in governance and decision making, strengthens communities, reduces vulnerability and advances multiple Sustainable Development Goals simultaneously.

Water is the main source for sustainable living. It is an essential commodity and we are buying it like other products including food, clothes, shelter and other needs in daily life. Conservation of natural resources are the prime cause to save and preserve for future needs. We can’t produce it like other products in general. It generates on its own when rain falls on this soil and be available when we dig it and take out for our use. Sometimes even if we dig in depth we can’t even get it. Wastage of water is neglecting natural resources like trees to cut them as we wish makes the soil dry and heat will increase in general and the rains will not fall in time to meet our needs and requirements. We should plant more trees to increase greenery which gives shade and fresh air along with rains makes us to thrist and drink the water to fill our stomach is essential and quite natural. Most of the villages, towns, and cities will form where the water resources are there like rivers, seas, lakes and canals will provide water we need for our daily use. If we save water and natural resources they save us. Human needs are most essential and we should look the future and kept in our mind and try to save them for future use. Most of the women will go far to bring water in small containers to meet the needs on daily basis. Gender equality is like another side of a coin. Girl child should be allowed to go to school and educate her par with a boy child. Elimination of dropouts at middle school and encourage them to prefer in higher education is equally important. Women are no way inferior than men. Equal pay gives equal respect for same job done by both is stressed here in this connection. Let us rededicate, redefine, and reflect ourselves to meet the needs on this occasion as mark of respect for women makes them pleasure and gives respect in every stage at all times on all occasions is the main criteria. If we neglect it we have to pay more price in due course.
