History of rubles

Translation

In the Russian Federation, the currency named «ruble» is used.

First ruble coin appeared only in 1654 during the monetary reform of Alexey Mikhailovich.

In the 19th century, coins were made of copper, silver, and gold. The ruble became the third currency in value after the British pound and the US dollar.

In the 1920s, the ruble was denominated, and the monetary system was reformed: coins of 1, 3 and 5 rubles appeared.

The devaluation and denomination of the ruble occurred more than once later.

On July 1, 1992, the free exchange rate of the ruble was introduced, after which it immediately fell to 125 rubles per dollar. There were bills worth 50,000 rubles, 100,000 rubles, and 500,000 rubles.

Today we use coins of 1, 2, 5 and 10 rubles, and banknotes of 50, 100, 200, 500, 1000 and 5000 rubles.

Daria Molchanova’s Slow Russian offers a patient, accessible path to understanding spoken Russian. As an experienced teacher, Daria structures each episode around clear, deliberately paced conversation, removing the common hurdle of native speed that can overwhelm learners. The core of this podcast is its namesake pace: spoken Russian delivered slowly enough to follow, yet naturally enough to feel authentic. Each segment typically includes a vocabulary breakdown, where key words and phrases are explained in context, turning listening practice into a direct lesson. Beyond grammar and pronunciation, Daria weaves in observations on Russian culture, traditions, and the nuances of daily life, providing the contextual glue that makes language stick. It’s designed for those who want to move beyond textbooks and engage with the rhythm and substance of the language in a manageable way. The result is a learning tool that feels less like a lecture and more like a guided tour of the Russian language, building comprehension and confidence with each slow-spoken episode.
