9 - Russian Valentine's Day

9 - Russian Valentine's Day

Author: Daria Molchanova February 16, 2016 Duration: 18:18

St. Valentine's Day in Russia
St. Valentine's Day came to Russia at the beginning of the 90's. At that time the "iron curtain" had fallen, and the Western culture finally began to come to the country.
But even nowadays, 20 years later, this holiday is not very popular among Russians. Of course, the stores are decorated with hearts, candies, and presents in heart-shaped form are being sold everywhere, romantic comedies are airing on TV.
Nevertheless, only a few truly celebrate this holiday. The elder generation and some religious people consider it "alien" and "not Russian". Sometimes they even organize some rallies against Valentine's day.
For the majority of young people, this day is just another reason to spend time with their sweethearts, to present small surprises to each other. Many couples have a romantic supper with candles and declare their love to each other.

Daria Molchanova’s Slow Russian offers a patient, accessible path to understanding spoken Russian. As an experienced teacher, Daria structures each episode around clear, deliberately paced conversation, removing the common hurdle of native speed that can overwhelm learners. The core of this podcast is its namesake pace: spoken Russian delivered slowly enough to follow, yet naturally enough to feel authentic. Each segment typically includes a vocabulary breakdown, where key words and phrases are explained in context, turning listening practice into a direct lesson. Beyond grammar and pronunciation, Daria weaves in observations on Russian culture, traditions, and the nuances of daily life, providing the contextual glue that makes language stick. It’s designed for those who want to move beyond textbooks and engage with the rhythm and substance of the language in a manageable way. The result is a learning tool that feels less like a lecture and more like a guided tour of the Russian language, building comprehension and confidence with each slow-spoken episode. You can find more resources and episodes on the podcast’s main website.
