95 Guys, Language Matters

95 Guys, Language Matters

Author: Jennifer Barcelos and Sandy Connery September 6, 2018 Duration: 20:21
This episode touches on our use of the word “guys” (and why it is so problematic). Usage of this term has seen a massive rise since the advent of the Internet, but it creates a subtle, yet troubling speech pattern for the plight of women. There is no gender-neutral, plural pronoun in the English language (unlike Spanish or German or a host of other languages), but choosing to default to an informal masculine plural pronoun is not the answer. The language that we choose to use each and everyday matters; by opting to be lazy with our language, we add more fodder to an existing series of microaggressions against women. According to Sherryl Kleinman, Professor Emeritus of  Sociology at UNC Chapel Hill, “...women want to be included in the term that refers to the higher-status group: men. But while being labeled one of the guys might make women feel included, it’s only a guise of inclusion, not the reality. If women were really included we wouldn’t have to disappear into the word guys.” Amen, sister. There’s a particular kind of ambition that isn’t just about scaling a business, but about building a life that feels whole and authentic along the way. That’s the space where Soulful MBA Podcast lives. Hosted by Jennifer Barcelos and Sandy Connery, this is a conversation between two friends who are actually doing it-navigating the messy, rewarding reality of creating a company from nothing. They talk through the logistics of remote partnership, the challenges of conscious online engagement, and the personal growth that happens when your work is deeply tied to your values. It feels less like a lecture and more like you’re overhearing a candid, strategic coffee chat between two people who’ve been there. You’ll find practical advice woven into stories of trial and error, all aimed at ambitious women who are done with the hustle-for-hustle’s-sake model. This podcast serves as both a roadmap and a reassurance, proving that a successful business can be built with intention, friendship, and a lot of soul.
