Episode 121: Pullens Yards

Author: Hold Fast Network June 17, 2014 Duration: 0:00
Built between 1870 and 1901, Pullens Yards were designed as living and working spaces for craftspeople in the heart of west Walworth. Today, the workshops are still occupied by a remarkably diverse group of crafters, traders and businesses. We paid a visit to the Yards on their Open Day and spoke to artists, engineers, jewelry makers and a set designer for operas on our wander through the various studio spaces.

Every week, Steve Walsh and Jack McInroy cross the river for South London Hardcore, a podcast that digs into the texture of life south of the Thames. This isn't a tour guide or a history lecture; it's a series of conversations and stories that capture the living, breathing culture of its neighbourhoods. As part of the Hold Fast Network, the show operates with a DIY spirit, focusing on the people, places, and peculiarities that define this vast part of the city. You'll hear about the vanishing pubs, the legendary venues, the street markets, and the unsung characters who give these boroughs their pulse. It’s about the specific atmosphere of a Peckham cafe, the debate over a Croydon landmark, or the legacy of a Brixton record shop. The podcast delves into how communities are shaped and how they resist change, all through a very local lens. Listening feels like being let in on a long-running conversation between two deeply knowledgeable mates, one that’s full of passion, humour, and a genuine fondness for its subject. For anyone curious about the real London beyond the postcards, or for those who already call it home, this show offers a vital connection. It’s the livin’ lick, a regular dose of transpontine life in all its gritty, glorious detail.
