S3, Ep : 57. How Spain Gives Retirees Holidays Worth Taking

Author: Spanish Loops September 9, 2026 Duration: 27:38

Have you ever wondered what happens when a country decides that retirement should come with a little sunshine, a nice hotel, and a holiday?

Well… Spain has an answer for that.

It’s called Imserso, and if you’re visiting Spain and suddenly notice thousands of Spanish retirees heading to the coast in the middle of winter, there’s a very good chance they’re on an Imserso holiday.

And honestly, it’s one of those wonderfully Spanish things that deserves a little explanation.

The idea began back in 1978, originally as a way of giving older people, particularly those who lived alone, the opportunity to enjoy holidays and social activities. But there was another clever idea behind it: keeping hotels, restaurants, transport companies and other tourism businesses working during Spain’s quieter months.

Fast-forward forty years, and the programme has become a remarkably large operation.

For the 2026–27 season, almost 880,000 places are being offered, covering Spain’s Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, the Balearic and Canary Islands, cultural circuits, nature trips, provincial capitals, Ceuta and Melilla.

And here’s the part that might make you raise an eyebrow.

A nine-night coastal holiday can start at around €309, including accommodation, full board and transport in many cases. There’s even a specially reserved group of places costing just €50 for people with particularly limited financial resources.

So who can actually go? What are the requirements? How does Spain decide who gets a place? Who pays for it? And why does the government consider holidays part of something as serious as healthy ageing?

This week on Spanish Loops, Fran and I are taking a closer look at Imserso, the Spanish holiday programme that manages to combine retirement, tourism, social policy and a surprisingly good deal.

So grab your coffee, pull up a chair, and let me tell you about one of Spain’s most curious traditions.

Because retirement in Spain apparently comes with one very important rule:

You’re not supposed to stop enjoying yourself.

Join Fran and Jorge, two seasoned tour guides whose enthusiasm for Spain is genuinely infectious. Their Spanish Loops podcast feels like pulling up a chair at a lively tapas bar for a long, meandering conversation. Forget dry recitations of dates and names; here, you get the vibrant layers of a country built on crossroads. Each episode is a deep dive into a specific loop-a theme that could be anything from the haunting history woven into a flamenco verse to the surprising science behind perfect paella. They move seamlessly between the ancient stones of Roman roads and the pulsing energy of a modern Madrid neighborhood, always with a guide’s eye for the telling detail and the human story. You’ll hear about curious traditions, personal anecdotes from the road, and those little-known facts that most guidebooks miss. The aim is to create a rich, sensory experience through your headphones, one that captures the warmth, complexity, and sheer joy of Spanish life. Listening to this podcast is less about passive learning and more about being swept up in a shared passion, leaving you with a fuller understanding and a genuine smile. Fran and Jorge don’t just describe places; they convey the feeling of being there, making every topic, whether grand or everyday, come alive with context and charm.
