In the book of Job, "the satan" isn't the devil battling God; it's a divine authority figure testing Job spiritually. The serpent in Genesis wasn't a talking snake that should have alarmed Eve; it was understood as a divine or magical being from another realm, which is why conversation with it seemed normal.
