S1.40 - Satan is Not in the Old Testament (The Truth About The Devil)

Author: Laura Farhy March 8, 2026 Duration: 11:40
Satan isn't in the Bible. At least not the way you think. The horned figure with a pitchfork ruling over hell? That's a medieval invention, not biblical teaching. In this episode, we explore what the Hebrew word "satan" actually meant to the original audience of the Old Testament. Instead of a proper name for the embodiment of evil, "satan" simply meant "adversary" or "opponent"—someone or something working against you. This completely changes how we read familiar passages. In the book of Job, "the satan" isn't the devil battling God; it's a divine authority figure testing Job spiritually. The serpent in Genesis wasn't a talking snake that should have alarmed Eve; it was understood as a divine or magical being from another realm, which is why conversation with it seemed normal. We discuss why reading ancient Jewish texts with modern Christian theology makes us miss essential meaning, how the concept of Satan evolved over centuries, and what Jesus might have actually meant when he told Peter "Get behind me, Satan." This isn't about diminishing faith. It's about reading Scripture the way it was meant to be read and understanding what the original audience believed versus what church tradition has taught us. In a landscape where many feel spiritually uprooted, Spiritually Homesteading | How to Lose Your Religion & Keep Your Jesus offers a different path. Hosted by Laura Farhy, this podcast moves beyond the familiar terrain of deconstruction to focus on the practical, often messy work of rebuilding a personal faith. It’s built on the metaphor of homesteading-the idea that a deep, sustainable spiritual life requires getting your hands dirty, planting seeds of curiosity, and tending to your own beliefs with intention. This space is specifically for those who feel disillusioned or wounded by institutional religion yet still feel a pull toward the essence of Jesus. Each episode is a conversation for the spiritually curious and hopeful, exploring how to separate cultural dogma from core spiritual truth. When you listen to this podcast, you’ll find honest discussions about navigating doubt, reclaiming personal agency in faith, and discovering what it means to cultivate a belief system that is genuinely your own. It’s about empowerment and ownership, creating a spiritual home from the ground up.
