On July 6, 2003, just after 1pm, 70 year-old Ernestine Harper was lying in bed taking a nap having just returned home from church. Ernestine was an activist in the local area of Bakersfield California, and had only been lying down a little while when she was awoken by gun shots. Ms. Harper pulled an antique revolver from her nightstand that she had purchased months before, she exited her room and was met in the hallway by a killer with a gun. She was able to pull the trigger six times, but because of the age and condition of the gun, all six were misfires. And Ernestine was gunned down. Two days later the entire community of Bakersfield was alerted that a family of five had been murdered. Ernestine, her daughter Joanie and Joanie's three young children (4,2,6 weeks)were all found dead in their home. Three generations of the Harpers family had just been erased. There has been a conviction in these murders that you will not believe, but now the man originally suspected of killing the family of five is suspected to be innocent.   EVERYTHING TRUE CRIME GUYS:   https://linktr.ee/Truecrimeguysproductions Patreon.com/truecrimeguys Merch: truecrimeguys.threadless.com   Sources: https://youtu.be/xIJG77rJ-ks https://www.kget.com/news/crime-watch/vincent-brothers-notorious-bakersfield-murder-featured-in-oxygen-show/ https://www.bakersfield.com/news/he-is-no-longer-my-father/article_b5b9c480-ded6-504b-8065-d67b54968fb6.html https://www.bakersfield.com/news/q-a-with-margaret-kern-and-her-mom-shann-kern/article_460faa55-ab92-5f10-aaa1-2ae229b8ffdf.html https://www.bakersfield.com/news/15-to-20-years-on-death-row/article_0020d7ab-a19d-52ff-bd53-93aeccf6b0e2.html https://youtu.be/a33lgZ90Vyc 2:35 for audio clip

The shadows hold more than just darkness; they contain stories that defy easy answers. Strange & Unexplained, from the team at True Crime Guys, ventures into that ambiguous space where conventional narratives fall apart. This isn't just a catalog of facts, but a thoughtful exploration of the human mysteries that linger long after the headlines fade. Each episode picks up a different thread-a disappearance that left no logical trail, a cold case with a bizarre twist, or an event that simply shouldn't be possible according to everything we think we know. The approach is self-aware, acknowledging the complexity of delving into real-life mysteries without resorting to sensationalism. You'll hear a deep dive into the details that make these cases so compelling and so frustrating, focusing on the unresolved questions that haunt families and investigators alike. It’s for anyone who finds themselves pondering the gaps in an official report or wondering about the fate of someone who vanished into thin air. By listening to this podcast, you become part of a conversation about the limits of evidence and the enduring pull of the unknown, all grounded in the true crime tradition of seeking truth, however elusive it may be.
