We all know about the atrocities caused by Nazi Germany during WW2, but very little light is shed on the devastation caused by Imperialist Japan at the time, specifically against the people of the Filipino Isles. During the height of the war women under Japanese control in the Pacific experienced ultimate vulnerability. Girls and young women, which were rarely differentiated from each other, were killed or captured and turned into ‘comfort women’. Now we are not talking about brothels or sex work. These comfot women were taken to comfort homes where they were kept as sex slaves for Japanese soliders. So they were actually serial rape houses, sanctioned by the Japanese military. Rape, abduction, mutilation, executions were all daily threats, so much so that everyday tasks like fetching water, or picking up groceries became to dangerous to do alone. This is what caused one school teacher to rise up and become one of the only female guerrilla captains in her area.   EVERYTHING TRUE CRIME GUYS:   https://linktr.ee/Truecrimeguysproductions Patreon.com/truecrimeguys Merch: truecrimeguys.threadless.com   Sources: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nieves_Fernandez https://www.esquiremag.ph/long-reads/features/nieves-fernandez-guerilla-wwii-a00293-20200915-lfrm https://rarehistoricalphotos.com/captain-nieves-fernandez-1944/ https://www.pacificatrocities.org/female-guerrillas-600963.html

The shadows hold more than just darkness; they contain stories that defy easy answers. Strange & Unexplained, from the team at True Crime Guys, ventures into that ambiguous space where conventional narratives fall apart. This isn't just a catalog of facts, but a thoughtful exploration of the human mysteries that linger long after the headlines fade. Each episode picks up a different thread-a disappearance that left no logical trail, a cold case with a bizarre twist, or an event that simply shouldn't be possible according to everything we think we know. The approach is self-aware, acknowledging the complexity of delving into real-life mysteries without resorting to sensationalism. You'll hear a deep dive into the details that make these cases so compelling and so frustrating, focusing on the unresolved questions that haunt families and investigators alike. It’s for anyone who finds themselves pondering the gaps in an official report or wondering about the fate of someone who vanished into thin air. By listening to this podcast, you become part of a conversation about the limits of evidence and the enduring pull of the unknown, all grounded in the true crime tradition of seeking truth, however elusive it may be.
