Has Free Agency Changed The Bills Draft Priorities?

Has Free Agency Changed The Bills Draft Priorities?

Author: Blue Wire March 18, 2024 Duration: 1:03:53

On this episode of Talking Buffalo, Patrick Moran is joined by frenemy and recurring guest Joe From Queens to discuss, much to Joe's chagrin if Brandon Beane and the Buffalo Bills may end up shifting their draft priorities after signing two wide receivers within the first week of free agency, one of them to a pretty significant contract.

It felt like a foregone conclusion the Bills will use their first overall pick (28) to select a wide receiver in the draft, whether they stay pat or move up/down in the draft to get one. That still very well could be the case but it doesn't feel like quite the lock it was pre-free agency after Beaned signed wide receiver Curtis Samuel to a three-year deal worth up to $30 million and $15 million guaranteed this past Thursday. Samuel is very talented but the signing was a bit odd considering he's primarily a slot receiver and the Bills got great late season production from Khalil Shakir there in 2023. The guys talk about Samuel's addition and how they seem him being used and fitting into Joe Brady's offense--with the caveat that Joe isn't nearly as high on Shakir as most.

That along with the addition of Mack Hollins near the bottom part of the position depth brings up the possibility that maybe the Bills won't be drafting a wide receiver in round one anymore. One could argue and Patrick certainly does that there's no other positions that are notably bigger needs than receiver. As of this recording Buffalo has more glaring holes at defensive tackle behind Ed Oliver and DaQuan Jones as well as free safety.

That plus some observations from a wild week around the league and much more. Follow Joe on Twitter @BuffaloWins.

There's a particular kind of passion that comes from following Buffalo sports, a mix of unwavering hope and hardened realism that Talking Buffalo captures perfectly. Hosted by Buffalo-born Patrick Moran, this Blue Wire podcast dives deep into the heart of the city's teams, with a primary focus on the emotional rollercoasters provided by the Bills and Sabres. Patrick doesn't just report on games; he lives them, offering a perspective that can swing from critical skepticism to full-blown optimism in a single conversation. That authentic, sometimes self-deprecating fan voice is exactly what drives each episode. The show regularly features interviews with guests from across the sports world, media, and even pop culture, providing unique angles and insider insights you won't find elsewhere. It’s this blend of local passion, candid analysis, and diverse conversations that gives the podcast its character.
