Good afternoon. Alaska. I'm Matt Mullins. Winter just tapped us on the shoulder with half an inch of fresh snow overnight. Light flurries are still drifting through this morning. But that's the warm-up act. The real cold is waiting in the wings. Down in Southeast, snow showers are rolling through with serious intent — one to three inches by this afternoon, then three to five more tonight. Highs hit 33 degrees today, dropping to 25 overnight. Winds stay calm at five miles an hour. Monday continues the pattern with more snow and highs at 31. Southcentral sees a quick snow chance late morning, then skies turn mostly cloudy. Highs reach 21 degrees with north winds gusting to 25 miles an hour — the kind that finds every gap in your jacket. Tonight plunges to 3 degrees. Monday brightens up with mostly sunny skies and a high near 16. Now the Interior. Today tops out at 4 degrees under mostly cloudy skies. Tonight crashes to minus 17 degrees. Monday stays mostly cloudy with a high near minus 5. Then the real punch lands: Monday night bottoms out at minus 26 degrees. By Tuesday night, some valleys could see minus 34 degrees. That's frostbite-in-minutes cold, folks. Cover every inch of exposed skin. North Slope — blizzard warnings are in effect through Wednesday. Winds gust to 45 miles an hour, whipping up fresh snow and creating whiteout conditions. Travel is extremely dangerous. In Looking ahead, the cold intensifies Tuesday and Wednesday, with the Interior seeing some of the coldest temperatures of the season. Thursday brings high pressure and stabilization, but it stays frigid through Friday. Charge your phones and fill up the gas tank before tonight. See you this evening.
