Alaska Weather 3/9 Morning - Blizzard Warning

Author: The Weather Podcast, Inc. March 9, 2026 Duration: 1:49
Good morning. Alaska. I'm Michael Mosby. Alaska is locked in a deep freeze this morning. And the Interior is taking the worst of it. Fairbanks sits at minus 20 degrees right now. Feels like minus 34 with the wind chill. That's the kind of cold where breathing hurts. You'll climb to minus 5 degrees this afternoon, then crash to minus 31 tonight. By Wednesday morning, some Interior valleys could hit minus 40. Cover that exposed skin if you're heading out — frostbite doesn't ask permission. Down in Southcentral, you're starting at minus 2 degrees with partly cloudy skies. You'll warm to 15 degrees this afternoon under mostly sunny skies. Light northeast winds around 5 miles an hour. Tonight drops to minus 10 degrees. Tuesday brings another mostly sunny day with a high near 11 degrees. Southeast Alaska tells a completely different story — snow. Heavy at times. Snow showers continue through this morning with 3 to 5 inches possible by tonight. Cloudy skies, high near 31 degrees, northeast winds 10 to 15 miles an hour. Visibility drops to a mile or less in the heavier bands. Tonight stays active with snow showers continuing. Low around 20 degrees. Another 1 to 3 inches possible overnight. Drive carefully in that snow. The big story this week is dangerous blizzard conditions along the eastern Arctic Coast. Winds gust to 60 miles an hour Tuesday at Kaktovik. Ground blizzards reduce visibility to near zero. Stay off the roads if you can. Looking ahead, the Interior stays brutally cold through Wednesday with highs struggling to reach zero. Western Alaska sees light snow arrive Wednesday and continue through Friday. Southeast continues with scattered snow showers through Tuesday before conditions improve midweek. See you this afternoon.
