Good morning! I'm Aaron Jolly. And welcome to the Alaska Weather Podcast — it's Wednesday, February 25th. That dusting yesterday was just the opening act. Today brings the kind of cold that demands respect. Southcentral Alaska, you woke up to minU S Two degrees around 8 A.M. That steady north wind at 15 miles an hour? It makes exposed skin feel like minU S Two2. You'll climb to 7 degrees by 3 P.M. under mostly sunny skies. Tonight, blowing snow swirls around before 9 P.M., then clears to partly cloudy with a low near minus 4. Now head north to the Interior. Fairbanks sits at minU S Two8 right now. A quick burst of snow flies between 2 A.M. and 5 A.M. Your high today hits minU S One4 around 4 P.M. Then the bottom drops out. You're plunging to minus 33 by 2 A.M. Winds shift from west to northwest around 9 P.M. Wind chills crash to minus 36 degrees around 9 A.M. That's the kind of cold where breathing hurts. Down in Southeast Alaska, it's a different story entirely. Snow falls from 2 A.M. through 2 A.M. tomorrow, heaviest around noon with a 91 percent chance. You're looking at three to five inches piling up. Temperatures start at 38 degrees around 2 A.M., then drop to 24 by 2 A.M. as Arctic air floods in. Winds shift from southwest to southeast around 3 A.M. Looking ahead, high pressure builds across the state. Southcentral and the Interior stay dry but brutally cold. Interior valleys hit minus 40 Thursday night. Southeast stays active with multiple snow systems through the weekend. We're gaining nearly 6 minutes of daylight today, but winter's still got us in a chokehold. Cover that exposed skin. Your body can't negotiate with cold like this. That's your forecast — we'll be back tomorrow.
