Good evening. Alaska. I'm Michael Mosby. Alaska is having a bit of an identity crisis today. While the Interior is staring down a brutal deep freeze, the Southeast coast is bracing for a powerful wallop of snow and wind. As the sun sets. Let's start in Southcentral. You're seeing light snow this afternoon with highs topping out near 17 degrees. The snow continues tonight. And by morning, you're waking up to about 7 degrees. The snow tapers off Sunday, but don't get comfortable—cold air rushes right in. You'll be looking at temperatures crashing to minus 3 by Monday night. Up in the Interior, it's flat-out dangerous. Fairbanks sits at 4 degrees this afternoon, but tonight, the thermometer takes a nosedive to minus 18. Folks, limit your time outside, this is the kind of cold that doesn't negotiate. You see a slight warm-up to 5 degrees on Sunday, but Tuesday night brings another deep freeze with lows near minus 30. The big drama is unfolding in Southeast Alaska, while a Winter Storm Warning is in effect for Hyder. A strong low pressure system moves in Sunday, bringing heavy snow Sunday night into Monday. Expect 14 to 20 inches of accumulation—travel will be nearly impossible. Meanwhile. Prince of Wales Island is under a High Wind Warning, expect east winds gusting to 60 miles an hour. Over in Juneau, expect rain to mix in by Sunday afternoon. Looking ahead. Here's what the week ahead looks like. The Interior stays locked in a deep freeze with highs near zero and lows in the minus S Two0s and 30s. Southeast sees an active week with bands of snow showers continuing through Friday. Southcentral dries out but remains very cold. Keep those pipes dripping tonight. — See you tomorrow.
