Episode 143: A conversation between two premature babies as adults with Roma Norriss

Author: Marion Rose, PhD. June 24, 2023 Duration: 1:36:02
This is one of the most powerful conversations I've had! In this episode, I talked with Roma Norris, a Hand in Hand Parenting Instructor who was born at 32 weeks and was in an incubator for 5 weeks. I was born at 30 weeks and was also in an incubator for 5 weeks. We talked about a lot of things, including when we first realised that our experiences as babies had affected us, the effects we've experienced as a result, the healing we've done, and the feelings we've felt. Please note that we talk in depth about terror, panic attacks, painful physical symptoms and suicidal thoughts. However, we also share about the profound healing and transformation we've experienced and the super powers we have as a result of our experiences. We share suggestions for both adults who have had similar experiences, as well as parents of babies and children who were premature and how they can support deep healing. Marion Rose, PhD. hosts The Aware Parenting Podcast, drawing from her role as a level two instructor and regional coordinator for Australia and New Zealand within this philosophy. The foundation of her discussions is Aware Parenting, an approach developed by Aletha Solter, PhD. Rather than offering quick fixes or rigid rules, this podcast delves into the nuanced and often emotional landscape of raising children-and ourselves. Each episode considers the practical and psychological aspects of family life, from navigating daily challenges to understanding the deeper patterns that influence our reactions. You’ll hear explorations on how to support children’s emotional expression, build trusting relationships, and approach discipline from a place of connection. The concept of reparenting-the work we do to heal our own childhood experiences-is woven throughout, recognizing how our past shapes our present parenting. Marion’s perspective provides a compassionate framework for anyone looking to move beyond autopilot reactions and cultivate more awareness in their family dynamics. Tuning into this podcast feels like a thoughtful conversation with a knowledgeable guide, one that respects the complexity of both the child’s and the parent’s inner world.
