Episode 203: Sleep, neurobiology, and self-compassion with Joss Goulden

Author: Marion Rose, PhD. November 28, 2024 Duration: 57:44
I'm so grateful to have my dear friend and Level 2 Aware Parenting instructor colleague, Joss Goulden, for this final episode in the second sleep series. Joss shares in detail about the neurobiology of stress and trauma, and how that relates to sleep. We talk a lot about why it's so essential to be doing our own inner work and getting lots of support, so we can understand this information and yet be deeply compassionate with ourselves when we see our child dissociate before going to sleep, for example. Joss shares about how important it is as a parent to keep coming back to the principles of connection, warmth, and safety. We offer suggestions for how to feel more present and connected with our lovelies before sleep, including ways to tap into a sense of community, even if we're parenting on our own. Joss talks about why offering empathy makes a huge difference to our children, even if we're not able to offer attachment play or listen to their tears. We have a shared podcast, The Aware Parenting and Natural Learning Podcast, and Joss has her own podcast, The Aware Parenting Stories Podcast. She has a sale on her Aware Parenting Course for partners at the moment. She also offers 1:1 sessions, circles, and workshops, as well as other courses. Marion Rose, PhD. hosts The Aware Parenting Podcast, drawing from her role as a level two instructor and regional coordinator for Australia and New Zealand within this philosophy. The foundation of her discussions is Aware Parenting, an approach developed by Aletha Solter, PhD. Rather than offering quick fixes or rigid rules, this podcast delves into the nuanced and often emotional landscape of raising children-and ourselves. Each episode considers the practical and psychological aspects of family life, from navigating daily challenges to understanding the deeper patterns that influence our reactions. You’ll hear explorations on how to support children’s emotional expression, build trusting relationships, and approach discipline from a place of connection. The concept of reparenting-the work we do to heal our own childhood experiences-is woven throughout, recognizing how our past shapes our present parenting. Marion’s perspective provides a compassionate framework for anyone looking to move beyond autopilot reactions and cultivate more awareness in their family dynamics. Tuning into this podcast feels like a thoughtful conversation with a knowledgeable guide, one that respects the complexity of both the child’s and the parent’s inner world.
