Episode 221: "The journey to becoming myself" with Carly Facius

Author: Marion Rose, PhD. February 26, 2025 Duration: 52:34
I'm so delighted that Carly Facius has returned to the podcast for the 6th time. She was also on episodes 149, 154, 159, 199, and 202. Carly is a mother of three, Registered Midwife, International Board Certified Lactation Consultant, holds a Master of Primary Maternity Care, and is an Aware Parenting instructor. Carly shares about the very beginning of her journey to becoming an Aware Parenting instructor, which was when her Mum asked her to watch her brother, who would hold his breath. This was the beginning of her long journey of deeply observing babies. She was also deeply influenced by her mum, who was a midwife, and all the conversations about birth that she had with her mum whilst growing up. Carly shares about her experience travelling the world, and how that helped her later journey, including as an Aware Parenting instructor, and then about her experiences training to be a midwife. We talk about how parents are taught to respond to babies, and what a powerful effect that that can have. Carly shares about how observing how people in Indonesia talk to babies also had a powerful effect on her. We also talk about our shared experience of presence with our babies. Carly talks about how Aware Parenting has helped her to get to know herself in ways that she didn't before, and how it's been an important part of her becoming herself. We also talk about how our own parenting experiences are so key in our journey as Aware Parenting instructors. Carly says "becoming an Aware Parenting instructor is an investment in your journey to becoming yourself." Marion Rose, PhD. hosts The Aware Parenting Podcast, drawing from her role as a level two instructor and regional coordinator for Australia and New Zealand within this philosophy. The foundation of her discussions is Aware Parenting, an approach developed by Aletha Solter, PhD. Rather than offering quick fixes or rigid rules, this podcast delves into the nuanced and often emotional landscape of raising children-and ourselves. Each episode considers the practical and psychological aspects of family life, from navigating daily challenges to understanding the deeper patterns that influence our reactions. You’ll hear explorations on how to support children’s emotional expression, build trusting relationships, and approach discipline from a place of connection. The concept of reparenting-the work we do to heal our own childhood experiences-is woven throughout, recognizing how our past shapes our present parenting. Marion’s perspective provides a compassionate framework for anyone looking to move beyond autopilot reactions and cultivate more awareness in their family dynamics. Tuning into this podcast feels like a thoughtful conversation with a knowledgeable guide, one that respects the complexity of both the child’s and the parent’s inner world.
