Episode 236: How to help children cooperate with Maru Rojas

Author: Marion Rose, PhD. August 18, 2025 Duration: 55:16
I'm so delighted that Maru Rojas, an Aware Parenting instructor in London, originally from Mexico, is back on the podcast again. Maru was on episodes 129 and 184. Maru and I discuss the nuances of helping children cooperate and understand the world around them. Maru shares examples of how providing information to babies and children can make everyday tasks like hair brushing, nail cutting, and applying sunscreen easier. We emphasise the importance of meeting children’s needs for agency, autonomy, and choice, while also addressing accumulated feelings that might cause them to be unwilling to cooperate. We explore how attachment play can be a magical tool to foster cooperation as well as the deeper connection it creates between parents and children. Maru is also a teacher of Elimination Communication and offers courses and 1:1 consultations in both Aware Parenting and EC. Marion Rose, PhD. hosts The Aware Parenting Podcast, drawing from her role as a level two instructor and regional coordinator for Australia and New Zealand within this philosophy. The foundation of her discussions is Aware Parenting, an approach developed by Aletha Solter, PhD. Rather than offering quick fixes or rigid rules, this podcast delves into the nuanced and often emotional landscape of raising children-and ourselves. Each episode considers the practical and psychological aspects of family life, from navigating daily challenges to understanding the deeper patterns that influence our reactions. You’ll hear explorations on how to support children’s emotional expression, build trusting relationships, and approach discipline from a place of connection. The concept of reparenting-the work we do to heal our own childhood experiences-is woven throughout, recognizing how our past shapes our present parenting. Marion’s perspective provides a compassionate framework for anyone looking to move beyond autopilot reactions and cultivate more awareness in their family dynamics. Tuning into this podcast feels like a thoughtful conversation with a knowledgeable guide, one that respects the complexity of both the child’s and the parent’s inner world.
