Introducing Beyond All Repair

In 1982, a single gunshot in a gritty New York apartment changed countless lives, centering on the death of punk musician Billy Balls. The Ballad of Billy Balls is not just a true crime story; it's a deep, personal excavation led by author iO Tillett Wright, whose own family was shattered by the event, and producer Austin Mitchell. Together, they navigate a raw and often chaotic world of downtown artists, activists, and outsiders, peeling back layers of memory and official record to question what really happened. This podcast becomes a profound exploration of how we cope with trauma, the fragile families we build outside of blood, and the narratives we cling to for survival. It’s a story about love in its most complicated forms, the legacy of violence, and the search for truth in a case that refuses to be simple. Created by Marc Smerling and Zac Stuart-Pontier, the series unfolds with a novelistic depth, blending personal testimony with investigative rigor. Listeners will hear an intimate, sometimes painful journey through the underground of 1980s New York, where the lines between victim, witness, and survivor blur. The ballad they unravel is haunting and human, a specific tragedy that echoes universal questions about justice, grief, and identity.
