The Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio
Tucked away in the bureaucratic heartland is The Department of Variance of Somewhere, Ohio, a fiction series from creator Rat Grimes that blends workplace drama with unsettling science. This isn't your average office job. The Department, a shadowy arm of the government, specializes in managing things that defy explanation. Each episode pulls you into a meticulously sound-designed world where the mundane collides with the paranormal. The story kicks off with a catastrophic containment breach, trapping two employees-the inexperienced Scarlet Jaunt and the weary mid-level agent Jasmine Control-on separate floors of a building that's no longer following the rules of reality. Their desperate, patchwork communication forms the core of the narrative as they navigate corridors that rewrite themselves, evade hostile entities, and endure a constant, invasive auditory dread. It’s a tense, character-driven saga about two people who must rely on wit and fractured instructions to survive their first day on the job gone horribly wrong. This podcast builds its suspense not just through monstrous threats, but through the eerie silence between staticky transmissions and the creeping horror of an environment actively working against its inhabitants. For anyone who enjoys narratives where personal dynamics unfold under extreme pressure within a richly imagined, weird fiction setting, this series offers a compelling and unnerving escape.
