721. Fitness That Feels Good Inside and Out - With Marcus Filly

721. Fitness That Feels Good Inside and Out - With Marcus Filly

Author: Mark Walsh July 24, 2025 Duration: 47:16

I sat down with Marcus Filly to talk about what happens when training stops being about beating records and starts being about feeling better - mentally, emotionally and physically. We explored how Marcus shifted from elite CrossFit competition to founding Functional Bodybuilding, a method that puts longevity and mental clarity at the centre of fitness.

Marcus opened up about burnout, fatherhood and the pressure to perform, and shared how he rebuilt a more sustainable relationship with training. We also got into what's broken in fitness culture, how social media influences the way people move, and why slowing down can actually make you stronger, and saner.

Marcus Filly is the founder of Functional Bodybuilding. After leaving medical school, he shifted his focus to health and fitness as a more direct way to help people through training and nutrition. With a background in competitive soccer and CrossFit, Marcus ran a CrossFit affiliate before evolving his coaching approach to prioritize individualization. Following burnout after the 2016 CrossFit Games and the birth of his first child, he developed Functional Bodybuilding to support longevity, sustainability and aesthetic performance in training.
