DJ Moose's Bouge de là - A tribute to Juliette Powell - June 9, 2025

This week on DJ Moose's TWIT we move away from trance temporarily to pay hommage to Juliette Powell who tragically passed away June 3rd, 3025 from bacterial meningitis. In 1992, as I was transitioning in style from rockabilly to goth, one thing remained constant. Dance music. I have always like dance music (really anything electronic). At the time I was in CEGEP and my late nights were filled with coffee, cigarettes, panicked typing on a Smith Corona electronic typewriter the assignment that was due in the morning... all the while accompanied by whatever dance show was playing on Mix 96, and I found dance music had the best beats for typing at speed (with 2-4 fingers). And this brings me to Juliette. At the time I lived in the only place in anglo Montreal that was served by Videotron, a cable tv provider that wasn't particularly interested in it's English subscribers, thus deeming us undeserving of MuchMusic, an English language music video cable TV channel. Instead we got MusiquePlus, it's french sister (much of my knowledge of Quebécois music comes from hours watching MusiquePlus hoping for that one Vanessa Paradis video... but I digress). And that brings me to Juliette Powell. She launched a show on MusiquePlus in 1992 called Bouge de là. A weekly dance party where you could go dance in studio to the videos they were showing. It was great (not that I would have admitted that to any of my goth friends at the time)! Juliette later moved on to MuchMusic (by which time Videotron had purchased CF Cable and acquired too many English subscribers not to give us MuchMusic in NDG... maybe that is why the CAQ/PQ are so anti-anglo... they didn't have MuchMusic... sorry digressing again) where she hosted Electric Circus and French Kiss, shows I also watched. And then life moved on. So the other day when I learned of her death, I took a moment to read about her life. I think she was pretty amazing (you can read her wiki here). From moving to Montreal as a child, to becoming a VJ whilst studying at McGill and to much more, and seemingly always to make this world a better place. Juliette is the kind of person I wish I had known in real life. The kind of person we should all aspire to be. May she rest in peace with dance music's pulsing beats.
