104: How to create a Strength Habit, Routine, or Ritual

Author: Lorrie Mickelson, Habits & Self Care June 15, 2024 Duration: 18:37

The past few episodes of the Habit Thrive Podcast have been all about strengthening💪 ourselves physically and mentally.

Today, on Episode #104, we are continuing our strength journey by learning how to✍️ create a strength habit, routine, or ritual.

Maybe you already have a strength routine as part of your day.🤷‍♀️ Or maybe you have been thinking🤔 about creating one.

No matter where you are on your strength journey, there is always room for adjustments😉 and additions!

The summer☀️ months are perfect👌 for getting excited about either adding more strength-building opportunities into your day or spicing🌶️ up your existing strength-training activities.

The most effective way to fully reap🤗 the benefits of strength training is to be consistent.

It can be easy to decide to implement a new routine or habit, but it can be challenging🫣 to stay consistent, and ☝️that’s where scheduling comes in.

Last week, we dabbled with scheduling by incorporating a plank or pushups into our daily routine for the week.🙌

So if you kept up your strength routine for the last week, give yourself a celebratory high-five!🥳👋

Now, we need to keep up the momentum.

And we can do that by expanding our container from one week to the entire summer: June, July and August.

The beauty of this routine is that it lasts long enough for us to notice and appreciate the results of our consistency; then we can change it up in the fall for the variety our brain craves and a renewed excitement for our habits.

So how do you set your summer strength habit, routine, or ritual?🤔

Consider the things that make summertime different from the rest of the year:

  • Warmer weather
  • More flexibility with your schedule
  • More energy
  • Access to your favorite activities like kayaking and golfing
  • More motivation to look and feel more comfortable in your clothes

Then focus on the habits and routines you already have that you can pair with a strength exercise:

  • Add some pushups or planks to your morning stretch
  • Do some squats and lunges right in your kitchen while your morning coffee is brewing
  • Schedule a kayak or paddleboard session on your family vacation this summer
  • Carry some hand weights on your evening walk

These strength habits don’t have to be long weightlifting🏋️ sessions. Just a morsel of movement every day will start to make a difference.

So, pull out your planners, and let’s schedule some strength habits!🫶
