They Came For Kings of Punk

Author: The Kings of Punk February 5, 2024 Duration: 1:44:36

A new episode on Monday, which we plan on making the norm going forward. THE KINGS start their episode with a brief tribute to deceased rock/proto-punk legend WAYNE KRAMER of the MC5. Brother Wayne pioneered the sound of punk rock and without him, we might not be doing any of this stuff.

After that, the KINGS delve into morbid recent events - specifically, the alleged crimes of one Justin Mohn. Justin Mohn, a now-infamous "overeducated white man", declared war on the United States Federal Government in a YouTube video posted to social media. The same YouTube video also featured Justin showing off his father Michael Mohn's (an Army Corps of Engineers employee) decapitated head in a plastic bag. Authorities found a large kitchen knife at the scene of the crime (which Justin Mohn had fled, headed for a National Guard Training Center - presumably targeting more federal employees). Grim stuff.

But this isn't "Kings of True Crime", this is a punk rock podcast. A music podcast more broadly. Your cohosts focus on Pennsylvania man Justin Mohn's very unique musical offerings. Justin Mohn's music, characterized by haunting melodies and thought-provoking lyrics, challenges conventional norms and pushes boundaries. That last sentence? That's how Justin Mohn's music should have been pitched when Justin Mohn emailed record labels. As you'll learn in this episode, the emails he actually sent did not say that. The KINGS compare his music with that of other musicians who killed people, and begin to touch on the concept of "Outsider Music".

Tune into The Kings of Punk for a raw, unfiltered conversation that digs far deeper than the standard three-chord anthem. This isn't a history lecture, though you'll certainly pick up some stories you've never heard before. Instead, it's a living, breathing commentary on the sound, the spirit, and the enduring chaos of punk rock and all the adjacent scenes it inspired-hardcore, post-punk, and whatever defiant noise comes next. Each episode feels like hanging out in a basement after a show, debating records, dissecting lyrics, and arguing about what the genre even means today. You'll hear passionate debates, unexpected connections to other art forms, and a genuine love for the music that refuses to play by the rules. Hosted by the folks who share the show's name, this podcast captures the authentic voice of a community that's always evolving. It's for anyone who believes the energy of punk isn't confined to a specific year or a single style but is a lens for looking at culture with a skeptical eye and a loud voice. Join the conversation and get a fresh take on the anthems you love and the underground sounds waiting to be discovered.
