337. Criminal Litigation with Joe Tamburino

337. Criminal Litigation with Joe Tamburino

Author: My Legal Academy July 24, 2023 Duration: 37:39

Today my guest is Joe Tamburino. Joe is a transplanted New Yorker who moved out to Minneapolis, Minnesota to go to law school and never left the city after that. Today, you're going to hear about his journey. We don't have too many criminal defense attorneys on the on the program so it's really nice to touch base with somebody as well known as Joe and get his observations on some of the nuances of developing a criminal defense for primarily criminal defense, and why some of the things that are necessary in that type of environment are different from say if you were to do a family law, or estate planning or something of that nature. It’s a great conversation, and I hope you enjoy listening

In this episode, Neil and Joe discuss:

  • How trial law is similar to acting.
  • Joe’s journey from the prosecutor’s office to being a public defender, to opening a private practice.
  • Why criminal lawyers get recruited more often than those doing civil work.
  • Creating a work-life balance as a criminal litigation attorney.

Key Takeaways:

  • Being in front of a jury is like being on stage - you have to convey your message not only with your words but also with your body language, you need to know your audience, and you need to know your material.
  • You need to have a good office manager. If they are good with the business administration and are willing to learn, they can be invaluable to growing and managing your firm.
  • If you want to work from home, do not get into criminal litigation. There are factors that will prevent it due to the nature of the field.
  • If you don’t know what tech is going to be available in the court room, call the clerk ahead of time. The jury wants something of a tech nature because they expect it and learn well with it.

"Really to learn how to manage people because everybody's different. Everybody has their own, pluses and minuses, not everyone can get along, not everyone is friendly. But you try to match that and you try to pick the best people that you can." —  Joe Tamburino
