375. Creating the Best Team Ever at Your Law Firm with David Burkus

Author: My Legal Academy July 10, 2023 Duration: 43:36

Today, we welcome back one of my friends, David Burkus. David is also one of my favorite authors and I met him back when he published his book, Friend of a Friend, which I believe is the single best book ever written about networking and the science behind networking and, more specifically, relationship marketing. Today we will talk about David’s newest book, Best Team Ever - which is all about the science behind teamwork. I couldn’t be more thrilled to have David back on the program today, enjoy!

In this episode, Neil and David discuss:

  • Why company culture is a bogus term.
  • The three key principles of every great team.
  • The answer to the overarching why is more important than the why itself.
  • Understanding who is served by every person on every team in your company.

Key Takeaways:

  • Culture is more of a team effort than a company-wide effort. The culture will be built by the habits of the teams, not the trinkets and trappings of an assigned “culture”.
  • We need interpersonal risk-taking in teams. In order to do that, we need to have psychological safety among the team.
  • A team with psychological safety will win far more often than a team that does not have it. The beneficial effects compound for those who do have the trust and respect that comes with psychological safety.
  • Remind your team that everyone is working towards the same goal, regardless of what their role in the organization is. Share the success stories. Show your team how they have made a difference to your clients.

"Every great, high-performing team is pretty similar to other ones. Every dysfunctional team might be dysfunctional in its own unique way. But those three similarities, we call them common understanding, psychological safety, and pro-social purpose." —  David Burkus
