Mishlei 16:1 - From Hashem is the Tongue's Reply (Part 1)

לְאָדָם מַעַרְכֵי לֵב, וּמֵיְיָ מַעֲנֵה לָשׁוֹן:

Length: 1 hour 2 minutes
Synopsis: This afternoon (7/23/25), in an unexpected plot twist, I was asked to give a two-part SUMMER Mishlei shiur! I chose the one pasuk from Chapter 16 that we skipped this year. Since this was a special shiur with some Mishleic neophytes, I decided to be a bit more explicit about Mishlei methodology than usual. We began by translating the pasuk, raising all the questions, and then developing our own theories. One of those theories lined up with Saadia Gaon’s commentary, so we pivoted to analyzing that instead. Tomorrow, after a quick review, I’ll share my own interpretation and the meforshim who led me there.

With gratitude to Hashem, I’m pleased to announce that I am officially listed as a teacher on YUTorah! Special thanks to Alex K., the sponsor of this week’s content, for suggesting that I make my debut in conjunction with Nach Yomi’s recent start of Sefer Mishlei and for helping make it possible. I’ll begin by uploading all 600+ of my Mishlei shiurim, including shiurim on every pasuk in chapters 10–14, 16, and 18–24, as well as most of chapter 15 and assorted other pesukim. After that, I’ll upload my other shiurim.

Rabbi Matt Schneeweiss hosts The Mishlei Podcast, a series of classes dedicated to a deep and practical exploration of Sefer Mishlei, known in English as the Book of Proverbs. This isn't a theoretical lecture series; instead, the rabbi grounds the ancient wisdom in a framework articulated by the sage Saadia Gaon, treating the text as a timeless manual for making smarter choices. The central idea is that Mishlei offers a path toward increasing lasting fulfillment and reducing future regret, making its lessons immediately relevant to daily decisions and relationships. Each episode, or shiur, usually concentrates on unpacking a single verse, examining its language, context, and layers of meaning. Listeners will find a thoughtful, step-by-step analysis that connects the biblical text to contemporary challenges in work, character development, and personal growth. The pace is deliberate, allowing space for reflection on how these principles apply off the page. For anyone interested in Jewish thought, self-improvement, or simply gaining a more thoughtful approach to life's complexities, this podcast provides a structured yet accessible guide. You'll hear a teacher's passion for the material without pretense, focusing on clarity and real-world application. Tune in for a quiet, intellectual engagement with one of the world's most enduring collections of wisdom literature.
