The NPCs Discuss - Early Access

Author: The NPCs October 6, 2022 Duration: 1:05:30

On today's episode: In the days of old (and yes, we do mean old), the only way to get your hands on a video game early was to play at one of several kiosks at Walmart, K-Mart, or Target OR purchase a video game magazine that had a demo disk attached to it. Now with both the demo disk gone and the majority of kiosks all but history, the industry has found new ways to adapt to bring early peeks at games into your home. Open betas and closed alphas are ripe for signing up, enticing hundreds of thousands to sign up and play an early build of a game to help devs figure out what to fix or tune before launch. But what if there was another way that gave players full access in advance? A way where you could purchase the game and play it as it was being developed? Say hello to Early Access - a way for devs (both big and small) to open up their game to the masses when it’s mostly playable. There have been many successes and failures that have made waves, but it’s not all sunshine and roses. So let’s talk about what happened then, and what’s going on now with Early Access.

Every week, Kyle and Travis settle in for a conversation that feels like hanging out in a friend's basement, dissecting the virtual worlds they love. Their The NPCs-Video Game Commentary, Video Game News, And More! is a weekly check-in from two self-proclaimed terrible gamers who are deeply invested in the culture and community surrounding their favorite pastime. You'll hear them unpack the titles they're actually playing, from the latest blockbusters to forgotten gems, and sift through the gaming news that actually matters to them. The discussion often meanders into the broader "video game life"-those funny, frustrating, and universally relatable moments that happen both on and off the screen. And yes, they might even circle back to their long-running, utterly unserious investigation into gaming's greatest mysteries, like the true parental lineage of a certain enigmatic figure in a trench coat. It's less about expert analysis and more about shared enthusiasm and genuine camaraderie. This podcast thrives on the unscripted tangents and personal anecdotes that come from two friends simply talking about what they enjoy, making each episode a casual and entertaining dive into the heart of gaming fandom.
