Episode 300 - Super Mario Bros. (NES)

Episode 300 - Super Mario Bros. (NES)

Author: Andrew Bascom and Mikey Ehrenworth January 30, 2024 Duration: 1:15:45

It's our 300th Episode, D-Pads!

When we first started this podcast roughly 6 years ago, the world had no idea what it was in for: a few weeks of poorly produced banter before the feed went silent? A forgotten corner of the internet where two friends catch one another up about their gaming habits? Mikey's ultimate manifesto?

Regardless, we've made it to 300 episodes and we couldn't have done it without the massive support of our listeners (and the modest YouTube viewership).

To celebrate where we are, we wanted to look back on where it all started with Super Mario Bros. on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES).

Largely credited with saving console gaming after the crash of 1983, this game would live on as one of Nintendo's crowning achievements, and one of the most memorable games of all time.

...but is it still worth playing in the modern day?

Remember those games you spent hours on as a kid, the ones that felt like perfect worlds? The Retrograde: A Video Game Podcast is a weekly conversation between hosts Andrew Bascom and Mikey Ehrenworth that digs into exactly that feeling. They don't just offer a simple review; instead, they revisit the titles that defined a generation-both the celebrated classics and the notorious flops-to ask a tougher question. With the clarity of adulthood, do these childhood favorites actually hold up? The discussion naturally blends personal nostalgia with a critical eye, often wandering into related pop culture from film and TV, all delivered with a casual, comedic tone. Listening to this podcast feels like hanging out with friends who share your specific, deep-cut gaming memories, debating whether that legendary 10/10 score was ever truly earned or if it's time for a more honest reassessment. It's less about definitive rankings and more about the fun and sometimes painful process of looking back.
