The Worst Year in Gaming History

The Worst Year in Gaming History

Author: Andrew Bascom and Mikey Ehrenworth September 26, 2023 Duration: 1:13:40

This week we draft a team of the best (and worst) games of 2014 to see what sort of mess we can come up with!

While it looks as though 2023 will go down as one of the strongest years for video games in recent memory (Starfield, Baldur's Gate 3, Tears of the Kingdom... Golum) we weren't always so lucky.

While it's tough to pin down an objective WORST year in video game history, we've scoured the releases of the past 30 or so years to try to find the one with the weakest releases.

That year? 2014.

Sure, it had some strong releases, but it also had a whole lot of duds, and more than a few cases where a great game was launched on a less-than-ideal console.

Plus: our thoughts on The Case of the Golden Idol DLC (The Lemurian Vampire) and the recent Microsoft Leaks!

Remember those games you spent hours on as a kid, the ones that felt like perfect worlds? The Retrograde: A Video Game Podcast is a weekly conversation between hosts Andrew Bascom and Mikey Ehrenworth that digs into exactly that feeling. They don't just offer a simple review; instead, they revisit the titles that defined a generation-both the celebrated classics and the notorious flops-to ask a tougher question. With the clarity of adulthood, do these childhood favorites actually hold up? The discussion naturally blends personal nostalgia with a critical eye, often wandering into related pop culture from film and TV, all delivered with a casual, comedic tone. Listening to this podcast feels like hanging out with friends who share your specific, deep-cut gaming memories, debating whether that legendary 10/10 score was ever truly earned or if it's time for a more honest reassessment. It's less about definitive rankings and more about the fun and sometimes painful process of looking back.
