We interrupt the regular sports talk to remember and celebrate the life of Barry Melrose, who passed away Wednesday at the age of 70 following a battle with Parkinson’s disease.

From Kelvington, Saskatchewan, to junior hockey in Weyburn and Kamloops, an NHL playing career, a Memorial Cup championship with the Medicine Hat Tigers, coaching Wayne Gretzky and the Los Angeles Kings to the 1993 Stanley Cup Final, and ultimately becoming one of the most recognizable voices in hockey through his decades with ESPN — Melrose left an unmistakable mark on the game.

Rod reflects on Barry’s incredible career, his Saskatchewan roots, his trademark mullet and suits, and shares some personal memories — including Melrose bringing down the house as guest speaker at the Regina Pats Sportsman’s Dinner.

For countless American hockey fans, Barry Melrose helped make the game larger than life. But no matter how famous he became, he never forgot where he came from.

Rest in peace, Barry Melrose. You truly were one of a kind.

🎙️ That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
