#329: Tone and Timing Coaching: The 1, 2, 3 Approach

Author: Kim John Payne/Center for Social Sustainability September 2, 2026 Duration: 14:42

In this episode, Kim John Payne introduces “tone and timing coaching," a simple way to help children (and ourselves) get the tone right when what's said comes out rude, fresh, aggressive, or grumpy. He explains that the content of a child's message is often perfectly fine; it's the delivery that isn't helpful. Since these moments arise multiple times every day, they offer countless opportunities to help children learn attunement: sensing the right time to speak and the right way to say something. Kim frames this as tuning an instrument, and notes that a sense of timing and tone will serve children well in friendships, at school, and crucially in their future adult lives.

The method is straightforward: rank each communication as a 1, 2, or 3. A One is right tone, right time, deserving of a little celebration and, importantly, full attention. A Two is right tone but wrong time, when a parent's plates are spinning and they can't focus even though the child asked nicely. A Three is wrong tone, wrong time, which needs to be named plainly and given little attention. Kim emphasizes giving children a grounded time scale rather than a vague "not now," which only invites whining. Instead: "Once I get dinner on the table, I'll give you my full attention, and we'll have a much better chance of working it out." For young children, he offers the playful image of “When I have our meal on the table I will have two eyes and two ears" versus “Right now I can only give you one eye and half an ear." He also shares the memorable "now answer" device: a now answer is always no (now minus the W), so children learn that patience yields a better outcome. For a Three that's meant to provoke, Kim recommends the broken-record approach, calmly declining attention while staying out ahead of it. And when a child nails a One, a small (not embarrassing) affirmation reinforces the choice, especially when it's rewarded with a parent's full attention.
