Episode 65 - I-SPY's Return

Author: The Ska Dads Podcast November 3, 2025 Duration: 1:19:21

"The best band that never made it. Ska, rock, whatever, THEY WERE AMAZING!!!" ~ Erick F. Morgan (The Skunks/Pietasters)

About a month ago I-Spy dropped a reimagined, reworked, remastered album of some of their material from decades ago on their terms. Many of their fans say this is long overdue. It's crazy what can happen over a pandemic.

On this episode we interview Washington DC's I-Spy. The members are spread out across the county but the music all starts and ends in DC. If you want to hear the members discuss DC's Go-Go scene, 80's and 90's Punk Rock, basement shows, Bad Brains, Miggie, Toots and the Maytals, The Skunks, and the old 930 club this is the episode for you! Zach Brown from the Chariots joins me to help me connect some of the missing pieces.

There's a particular energy to ska and reggae that feels like a secret handshake, a shared rhythm that connects people across generations. The Ska Dads Podcast is born from that connection, hosted by a couple of fathers whose daily lives might involve school runs and packed lunches, but whose hearts beat in sync with the upstroke. This isn't a lecture series, but a conversation between friends who happen to have a deep, abiding passion for the sounds that shaped them. You'll hear them dig into the records that define the genres, from the foundational Jamaican studios to the two-tone explosion and its modern echoes. They explore the history behind the movements, the distinctive styles of fashion and attitude that came with them, and the stories of the musicians and producers who made it all happen. Each episode feels like hanging out in a basement lined with vinyl, where the talk is as much about the cultural impact and personal memories tied to a song as it is about the music itself. Tune into this podcast for a genuine, deep-dive celebration of the rhythms they love, all delivered with the warmth and insight of dads who know that a great track is a story waiting to be told. It's a specific corner of the music world, examined with care and enthusiasm.
