EP18 - Pulp Fiction

Author: Dylan Davis March 24, 2019 Duration: 2:37:49
Mike White of The Projection Booth Podcast takes the reigns of The Super 70 Podcast as he guides you through one of the most successful independent films ever made, Quentin Tarantino’s Pulp Fiction. Winner of the Cannes Film Festival’s coveted Palm D’Or in 1994, Pulp Fiction scored seven Academy Award nominations and started or restarted several acting careers. It’s development, marketing, and distribution by Miramax Studios revolutionized independent cinema and its’ unconventional narrative structure, extensive use of homage and pastiche have led some to call it the prime example of postmodern film. Since its release it has been one of the rare films made after 1990 that has been grouped into the top 100 greatest films ever made and in 2013 was selected by the Library of Congress for preservation in the National Film Registry of the United States. But while we may recognize talent, we also may be missing a few things on the surface and ask ourselves when does pastiche stop and plagiarism begin? Join Mike as he takes you scene by scene through a film as well known now as Casablanca, by a director as well known now as Hitchcock. The Super 70 Podcast is available on iTunes, SoundCloud, Google Play, and my website at www.thatdylandavis.com. All music on The Super 70 Podcast is provided by Rozalind MacPhail whom you can all find on SoundCloud.

Dylan Davis hosts The Super 70 Podcast, a unique audio experience built for film lovers. Each episode is designed as a scene-by-scene commentary track meant to be played in sync with a specific movie, offering deep-dive analysis, behind-the-scenes trivia, and thoughtful observations you might miss on a solo viewing. Of course, you can also just enjoy the conversation on its own during a commute or while doing chores-the insights stand alone. Dylan brings the perspective of a creator himself, having written works like "FLYNN!", "Dating Virginia," "Buffalo Seine," and "Threshold." This background as a writer and a dedicated consumer of culture informs the discussions, which are less about simple review and more about engaging with film as a vital, layered art form. Tune in to this podcast for a guided tour through the details of cinema, where the focus is on understanding the craft and the choices that shape the stories on screen. It’s like having a well-informed friend in the room, pointing out the clever edits, the symbolic set design, or the narrative turns that define a film’s impact. The goal is to enrich your viewing experience and foster a deeper appreciation for the movies, one scene at a time.
