Kurt Cobain: Suicide or Homicide? The New Forensic Claims

Kurt Cobain: Suicide or Homicide? The New Forensic Claims

Author: The Crime Desk February 25, 2026 Duration: 20:35

In 1994, Kurt Cobain was found dead in a room above the garage of his Seattle home. Authorities ruled that he had died from a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head. The case was closed as a suicide.

But for more than 30 years, questions have lingered.

Now, a new independent team of forensic researchers has re-examined Cobain’s autopsy and crime scene evidence.

They claim to have identified five key details - from blood pattern analysis to toxicology findings - that they argue are inconsistent with the official ruling.

Seattle Police continue to maintain that Cobain died by suicide.

In this special episode of The Trial: USA, we speak with retired Seattle Police Captain Neil Low, who was serving on the force at the time of Cobain’s death and has since reviewed the new forensic report. He explains why the case is back in the headlines, what the independent team says they’ve uncovered, and why some now believe this was not a suicide, but a homicide.

We revisit the original investigation, examine the new claims, and ask: after all these years, is this case truly closed?

From its award-winning origins in the UK, The Trial: USA now turns its exacting focus to American courtrooms. This podcast, produced by The Crime Desk, moves far beyond the sensational headlines to place you inside the tense, often unpredictable theater of the nation's most consequential legal battles. Each episode is built from the ground up, meticulously reconstructing proceedings as the evidence unfolds in real time. You'll hear the pivotal testimony, the surprising objections, and the strategic maneuvers that define a case, all presented with a narrative drive that makes complex testimony accessible and utterly compelling. The series is distinguished by its exclusive access, featuring interviews with the detectives who built the investigation, the experts who dissected the facts, and the victims whose lives were changed. To ensure absolute fidelity to the record, The Trial: USA occasionally employs actors and generated voices to deliver verbatim quotes from court transcripts and documents, a method that underscores its commitment to factual storytelling over speculation.
