The Way the World Works: A Tuttle Twins Podcast for Families
If you built something with your own hands and your own time, who should get to keep it — and does the answer to that question tell you everything you need to know about capitalism?
Today's episode tackles a big question: is free-market capitalism just efficient, or is it actually fair? Brittany was inspired by a recent speech at the World Economic Forum — of all places, given how much that stage tends to favor more government control, not less — from Argentina's president, Javier Milei, arguing that capitalism isn't only the most efficient way to run an economy, it's also the most just one. Even people who dislike Milei's politics, Brittany points out, rarely argue that free markets don't work efficiently; the disagreement is almost always about whether they're fair.
Brittany walks through Milei's core point: almost nobody disputes that capitalism is efficient, even people who dislike it — the real objection critics raise is that it's unfair, that some people work hard while others simply profit off of them. She unpacks why that claim falls apart, using a simple thought experiment kids will recognize instantly: you save your allowance, buy your own Legos, and build an amazing spaceship — should a friend get to take it just because "it's not fair" that you built it alone and they didn't? From there she extends the same logic to taxation, to what "equality under the law" actually means versus equal outcomes, to natural rights, and to John Locke's idea of the "fruit of your labor" — making the case that efficiency and fairness in a free market aren't separate ideas competing with each other, but the same idea, viewed from two different angles.
