Shabbos Kestenbaum was a grad student at Harvard Divinity School in the fall of 2023. He was there to get an education from one of the most prestigious institutions on earth. The education he got, was not what he came for.

On October 7, 2023, Shabbos, an observant Jew, was astounded by the anti-Israel and deeply antisemitic vitriol that consumed Harvard within hours of the unspeakable atrocities that were committed by Hamas against the Jewish State of Israel.

The university broke out in a horrible rash of antisemitic and threatening demonstrations not just against Israel, but against the Jewish students and faculty on campus, as well. Despite pleas to the Harvard Administration to step in and take action to stop the threats, Shabbos was ignored.

Shortly thereafter, Harvard University President Claudine Gay uttered the famous words to Congress: calling for the genocide of Jews at Harvard was to be tolerated, "depending on the context."

Well, Gay lost her job and now Harvard finds itself being sued by a group of Jewish students--led by Kestenbaum--for violating Title VI and their rights to be protected on campus.

In this LIVE conversation, Shana Meyerson of YOGAthletica and Shabbos Kestenbaum discuss what it was like to be a student at Harvard in 2023/24, the implications of the administrations' inaction to defend its Jewish community, and why Shabbos ultimately decided to sue the university.

If you are a yogi or yogini who doesn't understand what the campus encampments, demonstrations, and violence mean for the future of higher learning, you owe it to yourself to listen to this discussion about the rampant antisemitism on our college campuses, how schools are fostering a climate of intimidation against Jews, and why everyone should care.

Hosted by Shana Meyerson, The Yoga of War Podcast: Fighting for Israel & The Jewish People exists in the complex space where spiritual principle meets stark reality. This podcast explores the profound moral and ethical questions surrounding the Israel-Gaza War, specifically through a pro-Israel lens, while being grounded in the ancient philosophy of yoga. The central, challenging tension is between the yogic tenet of Ahimsa-non-violence-and the duty to defend one’s community as discussed in texts like the Bhagavad Gita. Each episode features conversations with a diverse range of voices, from activists and thinkers to community leaders, who share their insights and personal reckonings with this conflict. Listeners will hear nuanced discussions that don’t shy away from the tragedy of war but instead seek to understand the justification and heavy responsibility of a defensive fight. It’s a series for those grappling with how to hold space for peace and spiritual non-violence while confronting the necessity of standing for Israel and Jewish peoplehood in a time of crisis. The dialogue in this podcast is intentionally focused, offering perspective and depth on current events filtered through enduring principles of faith, politics, and human dignity.
