#111 - Pride Month Special! A Conversation with Erica Friedman (Yuri Scholar & Manga Editor)

Author: Third Impact Anime Podcast June 25, 2021 Duration: 1:31:28
Happy Pride Month, everyone! For our 2021 Pride podcast, Tori and Sully have a chat with yuri researcher and Yuricon founder Erica Friedman! Erica goes into the development of her upcoming book, By Your Side: The First 100 Years of Yuri Manga & Anime, what it took to trace the history of yuri as a genre across a whole century of material, what excites her about yuri fandom today, and Sailor Moon (of course!)  Erica holds a Masters Degree in Library Science and a B.A. in Comparative Literature, and is a full-time researcher for a Fortune 100 company. She has lectured at dozens of conventions and presented at film festivals, notably the San Francisco Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and the London Lesbian and Gay Film Festival. She has participated in an academic lecture series at MIT, University of Illinois, University of Michigan, Michigan State University, Harvard University, Kanagawa University, and others. She has edited manga for JManga, Seven Seas and Udon Entertainment, most recently Riyoko Ikeda's epic historical classic, The Rose of Versailles. Visit Erica’s website here! Every other week, the conversation starts around a microphone with a group of longtime friends who have spent years hosting panels at anime conventions. Third Impact Anime Podcast is built from those late-night hotel lobby debates and packed conference room discussions, channeling that energy into a deep dive into the medium we love. This isn't just a review show; it's an exploration of the threads that connect classic series to today's trending hits, always with an eye on the artistic choices and cultural history that shape them. You'll hear us unpack new releases and revisit forgotten gems, share stories from the convention floor, and occasionally sit down with special guests from across the anime community. The result is a podcast that feels like hanging out with the most knowledgeable fans you know-the ones who can't help but talk a little too much about the details that make anime so compelling. Join us for a bi-weekly look at the artistry and passion that fuels this global phenomenon.
