Yellow Deli: 33 Locations, Zero Paychecks. Meet 12 Tribes.

A restaurant chain with thirty-three locations, glowing reviews, and zero paid employees. That is the Yellow Deli — and according to former members and investigators, it is allegedly the front door to one of the longest-running cult operations in America.

The Twelve Tribes, classified by the SPLC as a Christian fundamentalist cult, has reportedly operated for over fifty years across four continents. Their Yellow Deli restaurants are staffed by members who allegedly surrendered their savings, their legal names, and their family relationships when they joined. The group now maintains approximately forty communities in sixteen states and ten countries.

In this episode, Tony Brueski examines how the recruitment pipeline allegedly works. Former members describe a pattern that repeats across decades and countries: the warm welcome, the communal meals, the escalating invitations, and then the ask to give everything you own. The transition from customer to member reportedly happens so gradually that many do not recognize it until leaving feels impossible.

According to FBI interviews with former members, the group’s internal rules reportedly prohibit association with outsiders. Members are allegedly trained to present a welcoming front that conceals the level of control operating behind the scenes. One former member described the experience as being drawn into something beautiful that turned into a system where leaving meant walking away with nothing — no money, no name, no skills, no support.

The Yellow Deli is still open. The bread is still baking. And according to the people who got out, the pipeline is still running.
