President Jimmy Carter was officially laid to rest today, and at his funeral, sitting prominently in the National Cathedral, were of course all living presidents, most especially the newest President-elect Donald J. Trump. Kamala Harris was forced to endure another awkward moment when she looked visibly bothered by Trump and Obama chatting away. But what made this gathering all the more fitting, was how it reveals what many believe to be Carter’s most lasting legacy. A number of articles of late have recognized that among Carter’s, some would say, very few accomplishments, one, though inadvertent, was perhaps the single most consequential of them all: the rise of MAGA!
