Singing Mandarin to Richmond | Vancouver News

A 22-year-old computer science student from Calgary stunned the internet this summer by serenading Richmond, BC residents with Mandarin pop ballads—especially “A Spray of Plum Blossoms”—earning millions of views and heartfelt reactions. Despite initial nerves about being seen as odd, MacNeill’s fluency and cultural curiosity opened doors to warm, unexpected connections, including an elderly immigrant offering him lamb chops after his performance. His door-to-door singing, which included a Cantonese hit too, revealed a community eager to engage, proving that language bridges can be as sweet as the songs they carry—and that kindness often blooms where you least expect it.
