S5 E4: Hyponatremia with Max Nutt

S5 E4: Hyponatremia with Max Nutt

Author: Jared Freitas and Terra Swanson February 4, 2022 Duration: 0:00

Episode Notes

In this episode, we discuss the always daunting (but hopefully not anymore after listening) topic of hyponatremia - with our chief nephrology fellow Max Nutt. We get to hear a nephrologist walk us through how they think through the physiology and diagnosis of hyponatremia, and also how they approach management in the inpatient setting.

CORRECTION: At ~12:30 in the episode, it actually takes a total body water depletion of about 10% to result in hyponatremia, not 20%).

There’s a particular kind of learning that happens not from a textbook, but from the ongoing conversations between residents and faculty in the halls of a teaching hospital. The Vanderbilt Internal Medicine Residency Podcast, hosted by Jared Freitas and Terra Swanson, captures that dynamic. It’s a space where the evolving nature of medical science is met with practical, clinical discussion. Each episode feels like joining a group of dedicated physicians as they break down complex topics, review recent literature, and consider how new evidence should inform daily practice. You’ll hear candid reflections on patient care, nuanced debates about diagnostic approaches, and thoughtful analysis of how best practices are shaped and reshaped over time. This isn’t about offering definitive answers, but rather exploring the questions that arise at the forefront of internal medicine. The podcast serves as an audio extension of Vanderbilt’s residency program, emphasizing that a physician’s education is a continuous process. It’s for anyone who appreciates that medicine is both a science and an art, requiring practitioners to constantly integrate fresh knowledge with deep experience.
